Translation in learning English

In Ancient Times, priests used to translate the bible and other official documents from Greek and other Antique Languages to their first languages: French, Italian, German and others. This hard activity took them years. This was a form to learn a second language too and it was known as the TRANSLATION METHOD.

Using translation for learning English shouldn´t be seen as a problem. Every student needs to translate, no matter the level of the student  -advanced, intermediate or beginners- translation is used as a useful strategy to learn expressions, slangs, phrases or simple vocabulary words.

BUT...when does it become a real problem? The answer is very simple: When students use Spanish to write sentences, paragraphs, compositions or essays and then they try to "translate" them into English.
If you pay close attention to this, you will discover that this is the same activity done twice -very similar to the translations done by priests in ancient times-. It's stressful, time consuming and really annoying. What do you think? What is your best choice: translate or write in English first?

  2. Given this text, I could safely use the google translator to know what it said but I took the trouble to read it in English. The content seems very interesting, since apparently the priests had to have advanced studies and to devote several years to translate the Bible.

  5. I think it is highlighted in this text for any student regardless of level of learning English have the opportunity to translate because it is very necessary to write compositions, prayers and texts. But students should not use Spanish and then translate it into English to avoid prejudicing the teaching of English.

  6. In my opinion, I'm kind of agreement and disagreement with reading, because in doing a write in Spanish and then translate it into English, is a way to undermine the teaching of the student to learn. But then, I think an easy way to understand this language.

  10. I think than this text about translate is very interesting. And we shouldn’t write in Spanish and then translate it, because this is not the way to learn english, and for that reason I think than the best choice is write in english first.

  13. Although we often see English as a language complex and impractical to use for the country where we live we must always bear in mind that we are helpful to understand a language other than native language even if we are a bit difficult. This I find very inspiring read for those who learn English so they can see that nothing is impossible just need to put forward and study hard.

  14. In my opinion the students shouldn`t write in spanish and then try to translate them into English, because they work twice and the students can made a mistake. The students should begin to use the process of writing. This process consists on some items that are: Brainstorming, Free writing, Topic out line and the first draft.

  15. First at all english is a global use language and we must learn it to perfection, is such an amazing thing to knew how the priest took such a long time to translate the bible, i rather write in english than translate, but if you want to write really good it is really important to first learn how to talk, i rather learn how to talk and read in english than translate.

  16. For me it is essential write directly in English without need to formulate it before in Spanish so it costs us years and years of effort and dedication but is the only way to acquire and develop the skill to write and speak correctly this language

  17. About this text, I think it's better to write English, because we need to know this language and it is very important in our lives and our future. I also agree that the English language is enacted from small society.

  18. There are several reasons for this new translation of the Bible. This is the first time in history that a Catholic Bible translation was made directly from the original languages.
I personally think that maybe they had to be studied or divided among so many people that can do the translation in several languages; I think that is the lack of internet at that time to use the Google translator.

  19. I think that for translate any language you need at least a basic knowledge about the language you want translate, just like the priest becuase as we know the priest in other times had one of the best education and were the most prepared in this type of thing. So i believed that for do this activity we need to know. also is correct too that we cant translate when we are writting, but if we dont know how we can do that ? easy for no translate we need to know too.

  21. for me I think is good use of the translation because it is a way to learn another language, that does not mean it's always good words to use but you do not know I think there would be the right thing to use it, as also a must be able to move forward with their own knowledge they know whether or not.
